Hello and welcome to a new age of GabeN currency!

Why hello /pcmasterrace! Do you have time to talk about our Lord and Savior's very own cryptocoin: GabeNcoin?

What is GabenCoin?

GabenCoin is THE cryptocurrency of the master race. It was bestowed to the world on January 26, 2014 at 03:45:28 AM(Timezone unknown). It is named after our beloved and respected leader Sir Gabe Newell, bringer of source, sales, and contentment to the master race.
It is a coin that is mined using the scrypt algorithm that disburses 1000 coins per block at a target of one block every minute.
At /GabeN_coin we believe that mining cryptocurrency (magic internet money) should be fun for everyone. We keep everything light hearted and fun similar to how things are in /pcmasterrace. If you want to check us out come on down to /gaben_coin.

Why should I mine GabeNs?

Do you enjoy spreading the joy of GabeN to countless others? Do you have a graphics card in your shrine? Then you already have the equipment and the love of GabeN in your heart, so GabeNcoin is perfect for you.

How can I get started?

You can visit our wiki here for more information about how to set everything up. For beginnners, we recommend using guiminerscrypt. There are also some wonderful guides on puddleduck.net.

Where can I get real money and items for my GabeNcoin?

Come check /gaben_market , the official trading place of GabeNcoin. You are free to buy, sell or trade GabeN for goods, services, etc.

Bbbuttt... Think about the GPU's!?!?!?

We at /GabeN_coin do not condone gpu abuse and give our gpus plenty of gaming and rest in the time between mining sessions. We are a proud supporter of PETG (People for the Ethical Treatment of Graphics Cards).

How is this different from Bitcoin, Litecoin and other currencies?

Bitcoin and Litecoin use different mining algorithms. Bitcoins is currently solved extremely easily by machines called ASIC miners, which makes it no longer worthwhile for end users to mine. Bitcoin is accepted at many major retailers. We are similar to Litecoin technically speaking (we use Litecoin's scrypt algorithm), but our goal is similar to Dogecoin, in that we want to make a fun currency that people can spread around and reward other users with. We want to spread the goodwill that /pcmasterrace has and want to create a currency that reflects what GabeN does in the best way possible.

[Q] Is it still possible for someone with a decent GPU to mine Litecoin with a profit?

Hey guys,
So I recently started reading into the whole cryptocurrency thing, and thought I might give it a try.
Now bitcoin is obviously not an option anymore for someone with no dedicated gear for mining, but it seems Litecoin might still be.
What I have : Desktop PC with 4th gen core i5 CPU, AMD 270X GPU, and 8 GB or RAM.
Electricity in my country is fairly cheap, and I think it will not be a problem.
Is it worth it to start mining? pool or solo?
In addition - I've looked into some guides about starting and read about cgminer and guiminer. But it seems the guide was pretty outdated, so I would like to ask if there are guides you recommend for a starting miner to read, that are still relevant today.
Thanks!

[modpost] Possible wiki page, something I call "All about miners," covering things from basic terminology to miner config files and overclocking.

What is a miner?
A miner is a computer set up to solve cryptographic hashes in the litecoin network. Once a clump of these hashes, or a block, is mined, litecoins pop out! It's like opening a box of chocolates, except you know what you're gonna get :) Miners also handle transaction confirmations, making sure no single coin is double-spent.
Setting up your computer to be a miner
What kind of computer do I need?
Optimally, you'd have a good power supply and a couple decent Radeon/ATI/AMD graphics cards. Because of litecoin's hash algorithm, the gap between mining with graphics cards and processors is less than with most other cryptocurrencies, meaning that mining with some desktop processors may be worth it after electricity costs. Note that mining with laptops is not recommended because of the heat generated by mining, and mining with NVIDIA graphics cards may not be worth the cost.
How do I know if litecoin mining will be profitable for me?
First, check how fast you'll be mining with your hardware, how many litecoins you'll mine in a day, and how much litecoins are worth. Now, multiply the number of litecoins per day by their worth. Then, find out the power draw of your hardware, and calculate energy cost. Then finish by subtract energy cost from your daily earnings. If your number is positive, you're making that much money per day. If negative, you're losing money.
Keep in mind that the worth of litecoins goes up/down, and you have to earn the cost of your hardware before you churn a profit. Mining difficulty also goes up/down, depending on how many people are mining how fast in relation to how many litecoins are supposed to be generated how fast. See the economics(coming soon) post for more info.
Okay, I did all that. How do I start?
All you have to do is download a program and change some settings (later in the guide), and you're ready to go. If you're comfortable with configurations and the command line, Reaper and cgminer are your best friends. Otherwise, GUIMiner-scrypt is right for you. If you want to mine on your processor, download the "batteries included" miner via this link and setup should be relatively self-explanatory.
Do I mine alone?
Due to the difficulty of mining, we recommend that you mine with a pool where multiple people mine together. Visit your pool's about or help page for proper miner settings, which we're about to get to in-depth!
Under the hood
Configuring your miner (aka the hard part)
Before we get started, you should become familiar with these terms:
None of those will have any affect on how fast you mine. The settings that we'll be focusing on are:
If you're using GUIMiner-scrypt, there are default settings for different cards (lower right dropdown). I'm mining on a 7870. Here is what it looks like for me. You can follow along with the rest of this guide to optimize your settings. GUIMiner-scrypt is just a GUI to cgminer and reaper anyways.
If you are using a command-line miner, like reaper and cgminer, I recommend you download and isntall Notepad++ or SublimeText if on Linux.
Reaper is currently considered to be the best tool for mining. After you unzip your downloaded file, in the folder you'll find reaper.conf. It should look something like this:
kernel reaper.cl save_binaries yes enable_graceful_shutdown no long_polling yes platform 0 device 0 #mine bitcoin mine litecoin #mine solidcoin
This will make it mine litecoin on your first graphics card and reference litecoin.conf, which for me looks like
host us-pool.give-me-ltc.com port 8080 user poolusername.1 pass anything protocol litecoin worksize 256 vectors 1 aggression 18 threads_per_gpu 1 sharethreads 32 lookup_gap 2 gpu_thread_concurrency 15380
As you see, my thread concurrency is slightly different from the default of GUIMiner-scrypt. I found that this concurrency gives me the best hashrate!
NOTE: I do not use cgminer to mine litecoin. If you plan on using cgminer, which offers more hardware-controlling settings, in the cgminer folder you will want to create a text file. Then, open that text file w/ Notepad++ or SublimeText, then Save As > cgminer.con > file type > all. This will save the file with the proper name and as the proper type. Note that cgminer does not support high concurrencies. For me, cgminer.conf would look something like:
{ "pools" : [ { "url" : "XXX", "user" : "XXX", "pass" : "XXX" } ], "auto-fan" : true, "gpu-engine" : "920", "gpu-fan" : "0-100", "gpu-memclock" : "1375", "gpu-powertune" : "20", "gpu-vddc" : "1.219", "temp-cutoff" : "85", "temp-overheat" : "80", "temp-target" : "75", "temp-hysteresis" : "3", "kernel" : "scrypt", "gputhreads" : "1", "thread_concurrency": "8192", "worksize": "256", "intensity" : "dynamic", "vectors" : "1" }
You saw some settings similar to what we saw in Reaper's litecoin.conf. The other settings have to do with my card's clocks, voltage, and fan. This is covered in the overclocking section right below!
Overclocking (aka the risky part)
Okay, first off I'm not responsible if you cause damage to your parts. Please research safe overclock settings for your card. Second, don't be afraid. Modern hardware has many safety features in place that help prevent mayhem like me...lol jk this isn't a car insurance add. For your better understanding, become familiar with these terms:
No one setting controls how effectively you mine; what matters most when it comes to clocks is the ratio between your core/memory clocks. Generally, a ratio of 0.7 or below is best. You will need to experiment. If you're using cgminer, you can control card settings from the conf file. However, if you aren't, I recommend using MSI Afterburner as your overclocking tool. You will need to unlock some settings. Using my cgminer settings, MSI Afterburner looks like this. I have found these settings to be the most stable while bringing me a high hashrate.
Other people's optimum settings
You can check the sidebar for the hardware comparison chart, but it is rarely updated and has huge sways in results. It is a good starting place. The mods of this subreddit will be putting together an updated, more accurate list in the near future.
END
I hope all things go smoothly for you and that you've learned a lot! Please consider donating LTC to

I am having trouble mining litecoin

Last week I started really getting into CryptoCurrency and have done lots of research. I have decided that Litecoin is the best place for me to invest my mining but am having major difficulties getting it going and joining a pool. I have set up bitcoin mining, but can't get litecoin mining to work.
I am currently trying to mine with the coinotron pool and working with the GUIMiner-scrypt.
If anyone has any good tips or guides for me to go through (I have followed the one on the site and the sites it linked me to), I would greatly appreciate it. I would also like to here your pool recommendations.

PC GPU's Can Mine Cryptocurrencies when not Gaming. Consoles Sit Useless

You've invested money building a slick gaming PC? Unbeknownst to you, you've probably inadvertently built a great PC for mining Crypto currencies like Dogecoin, Litecoin, Darkcoin, Vertcoin, and thousands of others.
You can convert electricity into coins, and if you want you can trade these coins for Bitcoin or even USD.
New coins are launched everyday and during the first few hours/days of a coin launch it is easy to acquire a large share. If you do your research you can potentially get a large share of a coin that will build value.
For reference a single R9 270 card can produce ~1000 Dogecoins a day. Not much in USD value, but an easy way to dip your feet into a new hobby that utilizes hardware you've already invested in. You can mine whenever you aren't gaming.
I've been a PC buildegamer my whole life. I got into Crypto mining this January, and at first I was nervous about damaging components by running them so hard continuously, at rather high temperatures (80C). Well its been 6 months and there are no hardware stability issues. 6 Cards running at ~80C 24/7 for 6months. They run flawlessly. Thermal paste could probably be re-applied now. The point is, if you have a clean PC and know how to troubleshoot hardware you aren't going to damage your computer or graphics cards. Its been argued that gaming stresses the GPU's more because the load is changing high-low, whereas mining is constant high.
Anyways you want to know:
How can I start mining?
There are so many coins where do I start?
Dogecoin is the easiest coin to start mining (not necessarily most profitable) so we will start there and after you learn with Doge you can expand to new horizons.
Register at your pool. Create a worker. Go to the "getting started page" and copy the host "stratum+tcp://stratum.rapidhash.net" and port number "3333" and then you can enter your workepassword details and start mining. You can then carefully adjust your parameters to increase your mining speed. Increasing intensity too high can crash your card. Check out the configuration settings in this guide for approximately optimal settings for your GPU
If this sounds like a lot of work then this might not be the hobby for you. If you are interested about maximizing the potential of your gaming hardware and want to enter a new and engaging hobby, this might be the right place to start. Its also another thing that PC gamers can do that Consoles really fail at.
Now get into those mines and start digging!

Beginner tutorials?

Was using nicehash for a while until it got compromised. Now beginner here looking to mine bitcoin directly. Any updated recent tutorials out there to set everything up from start to finish? I came across GUIMiner which apparently is quite outdated. I already have the hardware, a wallet, and an understanding of the eco system, but only looking for help setting up the actual miner (no guides out there tell you which miner client to use) and statistics viewing.

cgminer on ubuntu

Ok, new to bitcoin mining. Wanted to experiment and have a little fun.
Found a guide for installing guiminer (and wallet, etc...) on Windows and within minutes I am chipping away. Minor head scratches, but nothing over the top.
Ubuntu.....love ubuntu....really love linux. Installed bfgminer. Might as well have been staring out a window into a pitch black night. Scratched my head a few times, figured a few things out, scratched my head a few more times, figured some more stuff out. No real instructions on the web that made any sense to me beyond what I was already figuring out. Blah....blah.....it sat there and spun some numbers out rather cripticly on a command line interface of which I could make no sense out of. Checked my pool for the worker I set up for ubuntu and 00000. Windows is running away with itself. Stepped away to let it run for an hour.....come back....00000.
Install cgminer. Configure it, seemed a little easier but what do I know. It is doing the same, spinning cryptic nonsense that probably tells me to go sit on a plunger as far as I know. Ubuntu worker....00000.....windows worker going to beat the band.....
Is there a bitcoin miner for ubuntu that doesn't involve standing on one foot holding a chair in the air with the opposite hand while scratching your balls with the other hand, combined with the ability to read crypticese?
Thanks in advance......

Cgminer errors with AMD Radeon HD 7450

Having trouble with GPU mining dogecoin. Here are my specs: AMD quad core CPU, 8GB RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 7450 1GB (an OEM HP graphics card, basically a rebranded HD 6450). I have tried Cgminer and GUIminer scrypt alpha. Cgminer has errors shown below, and GUIminer scrypt gets stuck at “Starting…” Also have installed AMD Catalyst 14.1 and OpenCL SDK. Having no problems with CPUminer. I strangely have no problems GPU mining bitcoin with GUIminer (non scrypt version). Read many forum threads about these errors and followed multiple guides with no luck.
This is my cmd output from launching cgminer 3.7.2:
[2014-02-13 20:53:43] Started cgminer 3.7.2

[2014-02-13 22:43:53] Restarting the GPU from the menu will not fix this.
[2014-02-13 22:43:53] Try restarting cgminer.
Launching Cgminer with the following: cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://pool.dogechain.info:3333 -u username.worker -p password
I cannot think of what else to try. Thanks in advance.

[BEG] - Poor luck, trying to make the world very good Much everyone mine altcoin quickly via my website. I want this to be the christmas where we all got unlimited wasteful spending for life.

Gonna skip the shibe-talk because I'm tryin' to actually say something
So I was interested in mining litecoin because it was more profitable than mining bitcoin. This was way back 11/25/2013(Thanksgiving). I got guiminer working and was like, wow, wemineltc pool is great, I gotta mine 5 litecoin and then I cash out for $150(litecoin legit was $40). This is good, I thought. My gaming PC was pretty good at mining. My brother and my friend wanted to get in on mining it too! So, niether of them had windows 7. We ordered $900 of parts including a legitimate windows 7 CD(3 keys). It mines altcoins at 360 khash/ each GPU, there are two. That, plus my comp would be 1020 khash, or make us cash out way more often. Thus, the math behind getting a $900 computer to mine litecoin was legitimate. I, my brother and my friend were expecting to break even in 6-8 weeks. While the parts were shipping I made a website all about my gaming computer mining rig. I used my girlfriends computer and took screenshots and got everything installed, for like, reproducible results. So you can go on my website and use my guide to start mining altcoins, all the links are there. When the new dedicated miner came, I shortened the instructions, and also made a page about the hardware.
My website shows up in google now, and I don't know how useful it is. I can't put ads on my site until I'm 18 on Jan 11, '14. Not that it's wrong to not put ads .. But I would feel like people are using the resource I've put up if I were seeing some like, revenue. (I like my website, don't you?
Combine this with the bad luck I had after telling people to mine litecoin instead of dogecoin! wow! (we had $120 (4LTC) and we were feeling good. Now we are feeling DOGEcoin. Officially switched the three GPUs mining LTC to mining DOGE.)So, to ensure my friend, my brother and I's I decided to make this post on dogecoinbeg I don't want this to be the christmas where I convinced my brother to buy a computer and was made a liar by saying it would pay for itself. I want this to be the christmas where we all got infinite wasteful spending for life. In exchange for donation I will help people get introduced to mining altcoins. donation addresses in bottom of JuliusAkula/Resources section.

I Need some help with miners

So I've spent a good amount of time the past couple weeks setting up my computer to mine, I've downloaded a bitcoin wallet, along with at least 4 or 5 miners. Nothing I do, no matter what pool I try to mine to is working. 50miner, guiminer, bfgminer, cgminer.
When I try to launch cgminer, it closes after inputting the url, port, user and pass. I tried making a config file, but it says there some sort of json error. BFGminer also crashed when run through the program. When I run it through command line, I get an "pool 0 slow/down or URL or credentials invalid."
I've looked at a bunch of different guides online, but none of them seem to apply to me and/or work.
